The 'Black Madonna of Montserrat' is a statue of the Virgin Mary that is located in the monastery of Montserrat on the mountain of the same name in Catalonia. The Black Madonna that is venerated today is a Romanesque statue from the 12th century. She depicts the Madonna with the child on her lap. In her right hand she holds a sphere that symbolizes the universe. The child has raised his right hand in a gesture of benediction and is holding a pine cone in his left hand; a sign of fertility and eternal life.
