About Capiz shells: These are made from the outer layer of a marine mollusk, whose scientific name is placuna placenta, also known as the window oyster. Capiz shells from the Philippines are so named because they were originally harvested from the shallow coastal waters near the city of Capiz, on the island of Panay. Once properly cleaned, these shells are naturally transparent, and when painted with a light, they create a particularly beautiful iridescence.
