The temple order was founded in 1120 to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land. The Templar Knights were feared warriors and turned out to be large landowners and bankers. In 1312, the largest religious order of knighthood ever was dissolved on the orders of Philip IV the Fair of France. Many Templars were executed. Less well known is the importance of the Low Countries as a logistical and financial hub for the temple order. Jan Hosten talks about the Flemish roots of the Knights Templar, their activities and commanderies in the Low Countries and the remains of that patrimony.
